Divers going out to dive

DAN® Dive Accident Insurance

At Deep Ocean Explore Store, safety doesn’t stop at the dock. Serious dive injuries can involve hyperbaric treatment, overseas hospital care, and emergency evacuation—costs that many standard health and travel policies either limit or exclude. DAN® (Divers Alert Network) offers dive accident insurance designed specifically to help cover these kinds of unexpected expenses for divers.

Note: Deep Ocean Explore Store is not an insurance broker or agent and does not sell, solicit, or administer any insurance. All DAN coverage is purchased directly from DAN or its authorized partners.

What Is DAN?

Divers Alert Network is a nonprofit dive safety organization that has supported divers for decades through its 24/7 emergency hotline, medical information services, research, and education.

DAN combines this safety mission with insurance options created specifically for diving and dive travel, so that when something goes wrong underwater or far from home, divers have access to knowledgeable help and financial protection up to the limits of their chosen plan.

How DAN Coverage Works

1. DAN Membership

To purchase DAN dive accident insurance in many regions, you first become a DAN member. Membership typically includes:

  • Emergency medical transportation & travel assistance when you are a set distance from home (for example, 50+ miles, depending on program and region).
  • Access to DAN’s 24/7 emergency hotline to coordinate care in the event of a dive accident or injury.
  • Travel assistance and safety resources, such as medical consultations and diver safety information.
  • Important: DAN membership by itself is focused on emergency transportation and assistance services. It does not cover the actual medical costs of treating a dive accident; for that, you add a DAN dive accident insurance plan.

2. DAN Dive Accident Insurance

  • Once you are a member, you can apply for DAN dive accident insurance (where available in your region). These plans are built specifically for divers and are intended to help pay for eligible medical expenses and related costs if you’re injured while diving.
  • Depending on the plan you choose (for example, Master, Preferred, or Guardian in the U.S.), DAN dive accident insurance may provide benefits such as:
  • Accident medical expense coverage for covered dive injuries, including hyperbaric chamber treatment, physician and hospital fees, and certain follow-up care, up to the plan’s limits.
  • Emergency medical transportation related to the dive accident, such as ground, air, or sea ambulance to the nearest appropriate medical facility or chamber when medically necessary and covered by the policy.
  • Accidental death & dismemberment benefits related to a covered dive accident.
  • Permanent & total disability benefits if a covered dive injury prevents you from returning to work, as defined in the policy.
  • Extra transportation and accommodations, such as additional airfare or hotel costs if your return trip is delayed because of treatment for a covered dive injury.
  • Coverage for lost or damaged dive equipment when it is unintentionally lost or damaged as a direct result of a covered dive accident.

Some plans may also extend certain benefits to named water sports or non-diving accidents, and top-tier plans can cover eligible expenses up to hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars per covered occurrence, subject to policy limits and terms.

Why Consider DAN Dive Accident Insurance?

  • Dive-specific protection – Designed around real dive accident scenarios, including decompression sickness, lung overexpansion injuries, and barotrauma.
  • Fills gaps in typical insurance – Many standard health and travel policies treat scuba diving as a hazardous activity or limit coverage outside your home country; DAN is built to address those gaps for covered dive accidents.
  • Global assistance – DAN coordinates help for divers around the world through regional DAN organizations in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Southern Africa, and other territories.
