PADI Advanced Open Water
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to help certified divers build on their existing skills, gain confidence, and explore new diving activities. It includes five adventure dives, two of which are mandatory: a deep dive and an underwater navigation dive. The other three dives are chosen based on the diver's interests, such as wreck diving, night diving, or underwater photography. This course allows divers to expand their experience and knowledge while exploring new underwater environments under the guidance of a PADI instructor.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is a progression for divers who want to build on the foundational skills they acquired during their Open Water Diver certification. Unlike the introductory course, which focuses heavily on classroom learning and basic dive skills, the Advanced Open Water course is more experiential, emphasizing hands-on learning through a series of five dives called "Adventure Dives."
Two of these dives are required: the deep dive, where divers go beyond the limits of the Open Water certification to depths of up to 30 meters (100 feet), and the underwater navigation dive, which hones your ability to use a compass and natural underwater features for navigation. The remaining three dives can be chosen based on your interests, with options that include peak performance buoyancy, wreck diving, underwater photography, night diving, and more.
Each dive is a unique opportunity to explore specialized skills, helping you to gain confidence, refine your technique, and adapt to various underwater conditions. The course is structured to be flexible, allowing you to focus on the diving experiences that are most relevant to your goals, whether it's exploring marine life at night or mastering buoyancy control.
One of the significant benefits of the Advanced Open Water Diver course is that each Adventure Dive you complete can be credited toward the corresponding PADI Specialty certification. This means that as you progress in your diving journey, you are also laying the groundwork for future certifications, all while becoming a more self-reliant and skilled diver.
The only prerequisite to start this course is having a PADI Open Water Diver certification. Divers as young as 15 can earn the Advanced Open Water Diver certification, while those aged 12 to 14 can obtain the Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification. The course does not require a written exam, making it a more enjoyable and practical way to enhance your diving skills while diving with a PADI Instructor.
This course not only improves your diving capabilities but also opens up a wider range of dive sites that are beyond the reach of Open Water divers. For more information on the course and to begin your training, you can visit the official PADI website.
